The 49th annual DCS/DHS all-class reunion was called to order shortly past one o'clock on the afternoon of Sunday, June 25th, by Alumni Association president David Tetor.  After the usual sumptuous buffet luncheon prepared by Bowers Catering, several of us in attendance took an extended and most comprehensive tour of the facilities offered to today's generation of students.  Jim Hand, member of the DCS maintenance staff, was our most courteous and knowledgeable guide through the maze of corridors and rooms that now constitute the Dundee Central School physical plant.  Those in attendance at this year's reunion, along with assorted spouses and relatives, include the following:

Doris Tetor Allen ('59)
Mary Backer ('70)
Frank Bloom ('47)
Joyce Fultz Bloom ('53)

Edwin Watling ('43)

Additionally, Peggy Robertson Herrick ('58), Barbara Dobbin Sweet ('61), Isadora Ide Ullrich ('40) and Chuck VerValin ('40) intended to join the festivities but could not come for various reasons.

David Disbrow ('64)
Peggy Robertson Herrick ('58)

The DaVinci Art Alliance based in Philadelphia is currently holding an exhibit entitled Cut It Out, featuring the fine art of paper cutting.  Each of forty-four artists submitted three pieces of work and our Felicia Salamendra Dvornicky ('62) won Best in Show for her creation Felicia's Garden shown below.

Felicia will be returning to Philadelphia and the Da Vinci Art Alliance on March 26th to present a workshop on wycinanki, the art of Polish paper cut-outs.

As we in Dundee shovel our way out of the heaviest snowfall of the winter season so far, we have this brief message from Randy McClain in sunny Santa Rosa, California:

WOW!  Thank you.  I was wondering how this picture thing worked.  Carlton (Tink or Tinker) McClain is one of my uncles.  My dad is David McClain, and then there is Merald (Mick or Mickey) . . . and then Tom McClain . . . and then Melody McClain.

It's with considerable sadness that we report the recent passing of two more DCS alumni:

Waddy J. Kick ('32), who was born in Barrington on August 5, 1912, passed away on June 1, 2005, as reported to us by Laura Crans.

Nana Elliott Clute ('54), wife of nationally known musician and devotee of old-time radio, Ed Clute, both of Watkins Glen, NY, left us this week after a long illness.  Your editor, also a fan of old-time radio, found the following tribute to Nana by Derek Tague in a daily newsletter on the subject of OTR  to which we both subscribe.

Date: Wed, 15 Jun 2005 08:41:11 -0400
From: "Derek Tague"
To: <old.time.radio@oldradio.net>
Subject:  Memories of Nana Clute

It's very difficult for me to write this, but I considered Nana Clute to be an integral part of the Old-Time Radio scene. For the record and for the benefit of those who never saw Ed and Nana Clute in action as they provided music for many an OTR convention, Nana pronounced her name "NAY-nuh" (rhymes w/ "Dana") rather than the traditional way based on the way it looks, i.e. "NAH-nuh."

Nana was Ed's eyes and was the one who prompted Ed, as she looked out for music cues during OTR re-creations. As testament to her importance, one year at the FOTR planning meeting, Arthur Anderson posted a gentle reminder that re-creation directors prepare their scripts so that the credit would read "Music by Ed and Nana Clute," and pointed out that the music not be solely attributed to Ed, because as Arthur mentioned "Ed can't do it alone." At this juncture at the meeting, "that Godfrey Guy" Lee Munsick (Lee was still living in NJ at the time) nominated Nana on-the-spot for the FOTR [Friends of Old-Time Radio] "Alan Rockford Award," which Ed had previously won. The Rockford award is presented to OTR hobbyists, particularly
those involved with the FOTR convention, who help further the hobby. Ed was happy to present this award to his beloved wife that autumn.

It always amazed me what a dynamo Nana was. She was short-statured woman who dedicated herself to her husband, whom she usually referred to as "Edward," and his art. She tirelessly drove the mini-van and unloaded Ed's keyboards, speakers, & other musical accoutrements.

It was an after-hours tradition at FOTR conventions for several of us to hang out in the bar at the Holiday Inn's bar/lounge.  I often found myself in with the crowd that included Ed & Nana Clute, Will & Babs Hutchins, Maggie & Valerie Thompson, Gary Yoggy & his contingent of central New York state OTR fans, including the Boogie-Woogie Girls, Anthony Tollin, and several others.  It was at these ad hoc gatherings where Ed and I would trade awful puns (the less said about them, the better). One time, Nana got a good one in:

Q: Did ya hear about the guy who went to sleep and dreamed he was the
tail-pipe of a 1952 Studebaker?
A: He woke up exhausted.

I'm sure I'm not alone in applauding the love and warmth that emanated from Nana Clute not only for the furtherance of this hobby, but also for her imcomparably talented husband Edwatd Clute. We'll all miss you Nana.

Derek Tague

We recently received several photos taken by Carl Hallenbeck ('35) at an alumni reunion some years ago.  We can identify only Daisy Hall ('44) and Dora Howell ('41) in the pictures, but other faces will certainly be familiar to some viewers.  Click on each image below for a larger view.  Photos were supplied to us by Anna Brown Clark ('35).

We have just received word from Cindy Barrett Rivera ('70) of Fayetteville, NC of the passing of her mother, Pauline Shrauger Barrett ('41) on April 1, 2005.  Mrs. Barrett was laid to rest next to her late husband at Hillside Cemetery in Dundee on April 9th.  On behalf of the community of DCS alumni, we extend our condolences to Cindy and family.

Anyone who has attended one of the last several alumni reunions and had a chance to meet and chat with Trudy Hinson Benson ('40) will recall what a delightful lady she is.  Her energy and effervescent personality bespeak of someone half her age.  A recent note from her daughter Christine in Rochester suggests that she may not be able to attend the 2005 reunion because of ill health.  If you would like to send a letter or a card of cheer to Trudy, it can be directed to her at Room 242, the Shire at Culverton, 2515 Culver Road, Rochester, NY 14609.

The following photos and article appeared in last week's edition of the Penn Yan Chronicle Express:

On behalf of the DCS Alumni Association your editor wishes to add our congratulations to Joyce Fultz Bloom ('53) and Frank Bloom ('47) on the occasion of their golden anniversary on April 16, 2005.

I have three records [LP's] of the [Dundee] Steel Band for sale - not sure of the years.  The numbers are RS 106, RS 111 and RS 146, and I was wondering if there were any interest in these older records.  Ron Miller was the director.  Leads on two of the records were Ruth Moore and Chip Harbour and on the other Kim Longstreth and Nadine Ames.  If there is any interest, or if other names are needed, please feel free to contact me.

I just found the website and enjoyed it very much.  If anyone can tell me about the '80 reunion, e-mail me, because I'm interested in going this time, if we're going to have one.  I'm sure we will.  I'm in Dundee again and have seen a few old classmates since I've come home.  Someone contact me, please.  Thanks.

We recently received word that Fred Backer ('58), who for some year's operated Fred's Restaurant at the four corners in Dundee, is at home recovering from surgery.  If you would like to drop him a card or give him a call, he can be reached at the following:  Fred D. Backer, Jr., 18 Narro Lane, Mt. Morris, NY 14510.  (585) 658-4399          [11/01/04]

We recently heard via e-mail from Mario Martinez ('79), who currently resides in California and works for the Boeing Company in Anaheim.  Mario asks if we could post pictures of each class from each year of the Highlander.  We are wondering what others think of this suggestion and if anyone would be interested in helping with a project of this nature.  While it would be a definite asset to chronicle the complete history of all classes in this way, it would be a major undertaking.  Please let us know your thoughts on the subject.

Mario returned home this fall to attend the 25th-year reunion of the class of '79, which was held at the Showboat Motel on Seneca Lake in Himrod and at the Dundee VFW.  He sends along a couple of pictures from the event.   [10/25/04]

It is with regret that we must report the passing of Bertha Vaughn ('32) this past summer.  Bertha enjoyed attending our alumni reunions in the past, but she was not able to do so this year.  She did call your editor prior to the reunion in June to express her regrets and to say that she was looking forward to seeing any pictures taken at the event.  We hope she did have that opportunity.  Bertha had a collection of Highlander yearbooks and other DCS memorabilia which her daughter Carole Vaughn Lawton ('58) has generously donated to the DCS Alumni Association.      [10/25/04]

Two recent entries in our guest book may be of general interest to the DCS alumni community, although neither is by an DCS alumnus.  Gary Behymer of Colfax, Washington, a collector and dealer in yearbooks, has eight Highlanders available ($25.00 each) from the years 1943 through 1951.  He may be reached at:  bjangary@colfax.com

Bob Durling is trying to locate an old friend who once lived on Stone Jug Road near Dundee and attended DCS.  Dan Brennan was a member of the DCS class of '77.  He had two sisters, Jayne ('76) and Maureen ('80).  If anyone can help locate Dan Brennan, Bob can be reached at:  durling_robert@isus.emc.com             [10/05/04]

On behalf of the Dundee Central School Alumni Association, and especially for those attending the 47th annual alumni reunion held on June 27th, we should like to express our sincere appreciation to Superintendent Nancy Zimar and the staff of DCS for the use of the facilities.  Special thanks are due  Helen Smith, member of the DCS maintenance staff, for the comprehensive and most informative tour she conducted of the building and campus.     [07/28/04]

Donna Bodine Treat ('61), who left DCS at the end of eighth grade to move with her family to Penn Yan, must have very fond memories of her days at DCS and living in Dundee.  Currently living in Wellford, South Carolina, Donna cannot attend this year's reunion, but she sends us a very generous donation in support of the DCS Alumni Association.  Thank you, Donna!     [06/03/04]

Isadora Ide Ullrich ('40), who has attended our annual alumni reunions faithfully over the past few years, will be coming again this year.  In addition, she has made a generous donation in support of the Alumni Association, and we should like to express our appreciation for that contribution on behalf of the Association.    [05/25/04]

Be sure to check the DCS Reunions page for the latest word on the DCS Class of 1954 50th year reunion scheduled for August 7-8, 2004.  Information is courtesy of Jack and Mary Lou Webster.

Bob Brimmer ('51) of Zephyhills, Florida sends along a generous contribution in support of the DCS Alumni Association, but he also explains that he will not be able to attend this year's reunion:

Dear Alumni of D.C.S.,

Again this year we must excuse ourselves from the annual alumni affair.  We have a granddaughter graduating on that day.  Dundee is close to my heart, but my family don't live in the area, and family come first.

God bless all those who hear my voice and/or read my words.  Maybe next year!

Bob Brimmer

[05/11/04]

Dave Tetor ('61), DCSAA vice president for 2003-2004, is the first to confirm his reservation to attend the 2004 DCS Alumni Association reunion on June 27, while Jean Bayer McEvoy ('57), Virginia Razy ('40), John A. Hammond ('45) and Neena K. Nagall all send along their regrets.  Neena has come to our reunions often in the past, but this year she will be attending her granddaughter's graduation that weekend.

We should also like to express our sincere appreciation to John A. Hammomd, Dave Tetor and Doris Tetor Allen for their generous donations in support of the Alumni Association.  In Dave's case his contribution is in memory of his father, Donald B. Tetor ('33), who passed away during the past year.            [05/05/04]

The DCS class of 1960 are planning their 45-year reunion for 2005, and they are looking for the following members of that class:

            Rebecca Doane (Grady)
            Faith Hansen (McGuire)
            Linda Heer (Mrs. John Luques)
            Philip Karlnoski (Linda)
            David McClain
            Sandra Rice (Mrs. Timothy Brown)
            John Robertson
            Joseph Searles
            Barbara Stradley (Mrs. Bruce Norton)
            Betty Watts (Mrs. Fred Santee)
            Nelson Holcomb

[02/24/04]

We wish to acknowledge the generous gift recently received from Steve Webster ('60) for the DCS Alumni Association.  Steve and his wife Deb operate the Gold Coast resort on Seneca Lake, just east of the village of Himrod.  Steve and your editor both grew up on what is now called North Plum Point Road, along that west shore of Seneca Lake, where it sometimes got very cold on winter days waiting for old bus No. 29.  Very often the lake would be billowing great clouds of steam during that time of year, but that did not seem to improve our comfort level very much!     [02/01/04]

We are saddened to report the passing of Robert MacFarlane ('56) on December 13, 2003, in Arlington, Virginia.  Both Bob and your editor lived in Himrod and rode on bus No. 29, that is when Bob wasn't driving his own venerable Henry J to school.  My folks shopped for groceries at the National Brands store Bob's parents ran in Himrod, and when I needed driving practice prior to taking my driver's test during the summer of '58, it was Bob who risked his life by riding along with me.  Fortunately Bob was able to attend the 2002 DCS alumni reunion, so a number of his friends from the 50's were able to meet and chat with him then.      [01/26/04]

It is with deep regret that we must report the recent passing of Mr. Donald Tetor ('33), father of Doris Tetor Allen ('59) and David Tetor ('61), currently vice president of the DCS Alumni Association.  All three have been regular attendees of our annual Alumni Association reunions at DCS in June each year, and many photos of Don and family can be found on our reunion photo pages.  Don's obituary, as it appeared in the December 3rd edition of the Dundee Observer, is shown below.   [12/04/03]

Doris Tetor Allen ('59) tells us that her husband passed away on October 19, 2001.  She also lost her sister Janice Tetor Sepos, who would have graduated from DCS in 1964, as well as a twenty-four-year- old nephew, during the last year.  She has moved in with her father Donald B. Tetor ('33), who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, while her daughter and grandson have moved into her house.  Doris and Don still spend as much time as possible at the Paradise Park camp grounds near Reading Center during the summer.   [10/27/03]

Dave Tetor, DCS Alumni Association president for 2002-2003, sends us a note about his appointment as supervisor for the the Town of Stanford (NY) after the sudden death of the incumbent. Dave says he held that position in the early 90's, but he finds that the job has changed considerably in the last decade.  Dave has also been appointed to a four-year term on the Cornell University Council and has been selected to be in Who's Who in America as an agricultural scientist for his service with Cornell Cooperative Extension for the past thirty years.  Congratulations, Dave!  [08/30/03]

Dave has sent us these pictures he snapped at the 46th annual DCS alumni reunion on June 29th.  You can see many more photos from the event by following the link on the home page.

We thank Norma Wright Wilcox ('50) for this 50th anniversary photo with husband Dean taken in 2000.

On June 29th, the DCS Alumni Association held a most successful 46th annual reunion of the alumni of Dundee High School and Dundee Central School.  The weather, the facilities, the luncheon and the company all proved delightful.  Your editor would like to take this opportunity to thank Superintendent Nancy Zimar for the use of the premises, Mindy Tortolon for leading members of the Dundee Pipe Band greeting alumni at the door, and DCS staff member Marietta Conklin for coordinating the tour and guiding us through the maze of corridors.  A full pictorial review of the reunion will be posted on this site in the near future.

Ed Olszyk ('48), who attended our recent reunion, announced that his own Class of 1948 55th-year reunion will be held on the evening of July 29th at Sarrasin's Restaurant in Penn Yan.  If you are a member of that class and have not already been contacted, you can get further information from Ed at 5250 County Route 10-A, Cameron, New Youk 14819.   [07/01/03]

On May 22nd, your editor had the pleasure of meeting with Peggy Robertson Herrick and other members of the DCS class of 1958 at Peggy's home in Altay, where she operates the Tobehanna Creek Bed and Breakfast.  We convened there to continue making plans for the 45th reunion of the class of '58, which is now scheduled for Saturday, July 26th, at Miller Land just north of Dundee.  Also attending were Gene Morris Denison, Annette Schoonover Wahl, Eleanor Bennett Parker, Bob Hunt and Jack Fowler.  (Click on the thumbnails below to view a larger image.)  [05/27/03]

It is with deep regret that we must report the passing of Mr. Harold Wilkin ('32) on December 24, 2002.  Mr. Wilkin has been a most generous contributor to this web site, particularly in its early years, with many interesting tales of his early life in Dundee, his career and his wide variety of interests.  Most recently Mr. Wilkin resided in Sun City, Arizona, along with his wife of sixty-two years.  Our Alumni Association vice president Dona Teske, who also now lives in Arizona,  recently talked with Mrs. Wilkin and tried to convey to her how much her husband has meant to this Association.  You can read more about Mr. Wilkin and his many contributionss to this site in both our Where Are They Now?  and Recollections sections.    [05/27/03]

A brief note from Mildred King tells us that she is sorry, but Dundee is just a little too far from her home in Daytona Beach, Florida to attend the 2003 Alumni Association Reunion. She will be attending her granddaughter's high school graduation in Vienna, Virginia, however.  [05/12/03]

Barbara Sweet ('61) is the first to send us her reservation to attend Reunion 2003.  Barbara, who lives in Hyde Park, New York along with husband Herb, is retired after working at IBM for thirty years.  She now serves as secretary to the Town of Hyde Park Historical Society and teaches computer/internet at Maris College and Bard College in the Hudson Valley.  Both Barbara and Herb are very active in amateur radio activities (WA2KCL and K2GBH respectively.)  [05/12/03]

So soon after the passing of Ken Witter, we were saddened to learn of the death of Reuel Drehmer on January 2, 2003 at his home in Winter Haven, Florida.  [01/20/03]

It is with deep regret that we must report the recent passing of Faith E. Slater ('39) and long-time DCS art teacher Kenneth J.P. Witter.  We reproduce Mr. Witter's obituary below, as it appeared in the December 11th edition of the Dundee Observer.  [12/16/02]

We have been holding this photo contributed by Steve Webster ('60) pending additional information about the class and/or some of the individuals pictured.  Such information has not been found, so we offer it here along with a request for assistance in establishing its background.  Can anyone help?  [08/25/02]

Trudie Henson Benson ('40) intended to attend our 2002 alumni reunion, but she was unable to because of a recent injury which has confined her to a wheel chair.  She is now taking physical therapy and writes:

"On Sunday afternoon, June 30th, Jame Gaston knocked at our door and brought me a a gift from DCS - a beautiful balloon made with our school colors!  Such a great thing to do, and I appreciated it so much!  Please pass my thanks on to others!  I look forward to driving again and to the 2003 reunion.

Sincerely,
Trudie Benson"

Editor's Note:  Your editor recently received a similar DCS "balloon" as a gift from our Alumni Association secretary Lucy Clingerman, and we also should like to express our appreciation for the kind gesture.  Lucy offers us an original poem reflecting her personal feelings on friendships made while attending DCS:

                                                        Friend to Friend

                                                We're from the same school,
                                                The same town of Dundee.
                                                Into this world we sprouted.
                                                Call it destiny!
It's friend to friend, a special thing,
A closeness to which we're tied.
                                                And you've always been there.
We've lived, loved or even cried.
                                                Anyway, I think it's fantastic
That you were meant to be
A part of my life, my friend.
You'll always be remembered by me!

Be sure to check our Recollections page and Where Are They Now? for more from Lucy, including a picture of her lovely family.  [07/22/02]
