The Bulletin Board

The Passing Scene:  We are adding a new feature to the DCSAA website which may be of interest to alumni who would like to stay in touch with day-to-day events in the lives of fellow DCS graduates or others of the DCS community, such as members of the professional and support staff at DCS.  We welcome your input on post-secondary school choices, marriages, births of children and grandchildren, career moves and retirements among DCS attendees, graduates and staff.  We begin with a listing of those in the DCS community who have passed on in recent years as compiled by DCSAA historian Donald Backer.  Click here.

The community gratefully and lovingly received its fallen hero, Christopher J. Scott, as a motocade brought his body from the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport to the Baird Funeral Home in Dundee on Saturday morning, September 10th.  Several tributes have since been posted on YouTube, and his funeral, held in the DCS gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon, was covered by television stations from both Elmira and Rochester.  Click the links below to view the tributes and press coverage by regional media.

It is with profound sadness that we must report the passing on August 14th of beloved DCS history teacher and coach John Ballard.  The following obituary appearing in the August 17th edition of the Dundee Observer  just begins to convey the great esteem in which Mr. Ballard was held by the school and the community he served so well for some sixty years.

LOCAL AGRICULTURE SPOKESMAN RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR

The New York State Association of County Agricultural Agents is proud to nominate David Tetor for the NACAA Hall of Fame Award.

Mr. Tetor is an exemplary individual who has demonstrated commitment, dedication and effective leadership in job performance as an outstanding educator. Mr. Tetor’s outstanding humanitarian service reaches far beyond the typical educator and community volunteer; the New York State Association of County Agricultural Agents recognizes David Tetor as a member with a sustained and distinguished career.

As a life member of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, David Tetor started with Cornell Cooperative Extension in January of 1970. Dave’s first responsibilities for Extension included the role of the Agricultural Program Leader for Herkimer County. In 1972, Dave moved to Dutchess County, NY to become the Agricultural Program Leader, a position from which he retired in December of 2000.

During David’s career he served as the a Region Director for the New York State Association of County Agricultural Agents and as the NYSACAA President, Vice President, and Secretary, followed by additional years on the NYSACCA Board of Directors. Mr. Tetor also served as Northeast Regional Vice-Chair for the National NACCA, and the Co-Chair for the NACCA registration committee for their annual meeting. David was the first member of the NYSACAA to receive both the Achievement Award, and the Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to and throughout David’s career in extension, he became involved in many civic organizations locally, as well as state wide. He is an active member of the Dutchess County Agricultural Society, the local grange and he is currently the Vice President of the New York State Agricultural Society. In addition, David serves as the Co-Chair of the Century Farm Award Committee and is on the Witter Agricultural Museum Board. David has been an active member of the Dutchess County Farm Bureau and the New York Farm Bureau.

David Tetor has been instrumental in forming and serving upon the boards of the Dutchess County Land Conservancy and the Dutchess County Lyme Disease Task Force. He has also been very involved in: the Dutchess County Industrial Development Agency, the Northern Dutchess Alliance Board, and the Dutchess County Community Action Partnership Board, in which he aided in the orchestration of a weatherization project for senior citizens and low income families. After retirement from Cooperative Extension, his civic duties included a position as the Town Supervisor for the town of Stanford.

David’s commitment to Cornell Cooperative Extension and the youth of his communities, over the years, has been demonstrated through his involvement as a 4-H club leader, and as a member of the Pine Pains Vo-Ag and FFA Advisory board. He is an active educator for the New York Northeast Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. David has also been a local radio personality. He made a commitment to provide two daily agricultural reports for over 21 years!

Since retirement, David finds time to provide agricultural advice, as a consultant, to educators, residents and farm owners in the Hudson Valley region.

The steering committee of the DCS Alumni Association convened for a short meeting in Dundee on Friday, August 5, to review the lack of interest in the annual all-class reunion, which had to be canceled for the first time in recent memory earlier this summer.  The following alumni were in attendance:  Dave Tetor ('61), DCSAA president; Doris Tetor Allen ('59), vice president; Eleanor Bennett Parker ('58), secretary; Albert J. Kopec ('58), treasurer; Donald Backer ('59), historian; Fred D. Backer, Jr. ('58); and Carol Anne Raps Moore ('59).  The first order of business was to vote on the annual DCSAA donations to local youth-oriented activities, and the consensus was to repeat our grants of last year:  $500.00 to the Dundee Dollars for Scholars program and $200.00 to the Dundee Area Youth Center, Inc.  The treasurer will make the necessary withdrawal from the DCSAA account held locally by the SERVU Federal Credit Union and deliver the allocated funds to the designated recipients.

Discussions followed regarding the continuing problem of attracting younger members of the DCS alumni community to the Alumni Association and improving attendance at our annual all-class reunions.  Various members of the group agreed to assigned tasks in pursuit of possible solutions to the problem, and another meeting will be scheduled in the near future to review the results of their collective efforts.  In a departure from our tradition of scheduling the annual DCSAA reunion in early summer, after the close of the school year, a tentative date of Friday, September 14, was agreed upon for 2012.

We have had a request for a 1953 DCS yearbook.  If anyone has one that could be made available on loan, please contact your website editor here.   Alternatively, if the owner of a 1953 DCS Highlander has the capability of making high resolution scans of certain specified portions of such a yearbook, those selected scans could be e-mailed to your editor in lieu of sending the entire yearbook via the U.S. postal service.  In either case, please let us know if anyone can help.

From Mrs. Carl Hallenbeck of Sebring, Florida:
.
Dear Sir,

Thank you for sending Carl and me an invitation to the Dundee Central School reunion.  We used to enjoy attending the meeting of old friends.

I am writing to tell you that Carl passed away on May 21st.  He had been in failing health for several years.  He spent the last two years in a nursing home here in Sebring.  I was able to visit him every day and help him whatever way I could.  I am so thankful that I was able to do that.

Carl attended Dundee Central School and graduated in 1935.

You may greet the people at the reunion for me.  I'm sorry I can't be there, but I'm permanently settled in Florida.

Sincerely,
Evelyn Hallenbeck

From Lori Empson Ratcliff ('78):

In August 1978, I enlisted in the U. S. Army, and after traveling to Germany and Italy, I was honorably discharged on December 31, 1985.  I returned to Dundee with my daughter Autumn, and we lived there until October 1987, when we moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where I lived until September 2009, when I moved to Sacramento, California.  I moved to California because I got married for the VERY first time in August, and my husband works for the State of California.

My brother, Jim Empson, moved to St. Louis in February 2000.  We had not seen each other for over 20 years, when one of his friend's found me on the Internet and he got in touch with me.  Autumn is 28 years old; she got married February 25th, 2009 to Pablo and they are very happy.  She still works for Sephora Cosmetics and is currently finishing up her associate's degree at St. Louis Community College.  Her ultimate goal is child psychology.

Outside of work, I just enjoy hanging out with my friends (Texas Hold 'Em is the big draw at this time), having dinner parties (Yes, I am THE cook!), and just trying to enjoy each day as it comes.

I miss upstate New York, but I hope to make it home sometime in next year.  Life does get in the way . . .

Lori's address information can be found in our Membership Roster.

DCS Alumni Association,

I noticed that I hadn't hit the bulletin board since February 2007.  Since then we moved to San Antonio in the summer of 2007.  We also have added a new little girl to our brood.  Our family is complete and I am now a stay-at-home mom doing part time daycare and constantly trying to find things to do for the kids.

Take care and keep in touch.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing this week of William G. Anderson, age 87.  Bill Anderson was a very close personal friend and mentor during our high school years at DCS, beginning with general science during the 1954-55 academic year and extending through chemistry in our senior year.  As many of you know, Mr. Anderson went on to serve in the the administration of DCS, including his tenure as principal.  We welcome and encourage you to contribute any of your own personal thoughts and recollections about this beloved and inspiring teacher we at DCS were so fortunate to have influence our lives.

A total of 45 DCS alumni, spouses and guests enjoyed our first reunion to be held at the Dundee American Legion on July 12, 2009.  We had one walk-in, Norman Hansen ('59), but Peggy Robertson Herrick ('58) and Darlene Scofield Shearns ('59) were unable to join us.  Special recognition was given to Clarence Sebring by the DCS Class of 1959.  In fact, Joyce Sistek Drake and Clark Depew, acting on behalf of the class, presented Clarence with a framed certificate making him an honorary member of the Class of 1959.  Clark went on to inform the gathering of a new scholarship fund being established in honor of Clarence and Clark's father, long-time DCS principal Gordon F. Depew.  Full details will be presented here on the scholarship fund as they become available, and a page of photos from this year's event will follow soon on this website.  Our special guest at the event this year was Fred D. Backer, Jr., honored for his continuing and very generous financial support of the DCS Alumni Association.

The following alumni have all made generous donations in support of the Dundee Central School Alumni Association:

Felicia Salamendra Dvornicky ('62) sends us a link to an extensive interview conducted with her sister, Theresa Salamendra Centrone ('66), former school teacher and author of the book How Not to Be A Bully Target, which draws on Theresa's years of experience in teaching.  We have profiled Theresa and her book here before, but now you can learn much more about the author, the inspiration for her chosen second career, and her views on the state of the independent author living in New York's southern Finger Lakes region.  There are many more such authors around than one might suspect according to Theresa.  Simply click here to read the entire interview.  Also on the page with Theresa's interview is a link to her sister Felicia's blog featuring many examples of the folk art practiced by Felicia.

Hello,

I would like to be listed on the DCS alumni page, as I have been out of touch with many for some time.  I have had a varied path since graduation in 1974 - from running the family farm to our move to Alabama with my entry into the information technology field and now with my current position as an information systems contractor to the Florida Department of Revenue.  Personal - I am married (30 years) with 3 children and one grandchild.

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Fred D. Backer ('58) for his most generous gift to the DCS Alumni Association.  Fred's donation is made in the name of his brother, Donald Backer ('59), who, we are happy to report, is still very much among the living.  Don came to his brother's aid during a recent medical prodedure Fred required and would not accept any compensation for all his efforts.  This is the way Fred chose to return the favor.  As treasurer of the DCS Alumni Association for most of the past ten years, your editor must point out that this is single largest donation made to the Association during that period, and we suspect, of all time.  On behalf of the DCS Alumni Association, thank you again, Fred.
