Reunion 2001

June 24, 2001

The 44th annual reunion of alumni of Dundee High School and Dundee Central School began promptly at noon on Sunday, June 24th.  Alumni Association president Dave Tetor ('61) presided at the sign-in desk, ably assisted by vice president Dona Gaston Teske ('61).  A cacophony of voices soon filled the DCS cafeteria and steadily increased in volume during the ensuing hour, as alumni continued to arrive.  Many stopped to view the continuous computer-generated slide show of scenes from previous reunions and images from the Alumni Association's web site.  Shortly after one o'clock, a sumptuous buffet-style luncheon was served by Bower Catering of Montour Falls.  With six or more attendees seated at each table lunch provided another venue for reminiscing and exchanging stories about careers, children and grand-children.

A brief business meeting following the luncheon served as a prelude to formal recognition by master of ceremonies Dave Tetor of several distinguished alumni present.  Oldest in attendance were Laura Crans and Bertha Vaughn, both from Dundee High School's Class of 1932.  Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hallenbeck ('35) were cited as the couple present who had been married longest - sixty years.  Marjorie Spencer ('44), both DCS graduate and DCS teacher, claimed the title of alumna with the youngest grand-child, a great grand-child just one month old on the day of the reunion.  Chuck VerValin ('40) came the farthest - from California, while Eugene Morgan ('61) from Arizona was runner-up.

The DCS Class of 1961 were particularly well represented at this year's alumni reunion, because they had just held their own 40-year class reunion in the Dundee area the previous day.  Among those present on Sunday were Allen Depew ('61) and older brother Clark ('59), sons of Dundee Central School's late, highly respected and long-serving principal Gordon F. Depew.  Allen also brought along his twin teen-age sons.  In total, eight members of the Class of 1961 attended this year's reunion.

The day's festivities culminated with an extended tour of the Dundee Central School campus, including the restored Barrington No. 4 one-room school house, conducted by our much-beloved Clarence Sebring ('39).

The DCS Class of 1941 celebrated their sixty-year reunion together with the Alumni Association reunion on June 24th.  Separate invitations prepared by Ruth Gilbert Forman were sent to each member of that class whose current address was known.  Unfortunately, only the four members shown in the photo below could attend:  Dora Rapalee Howell, Gladys Emery Aston, Ruth Gilbert Forman and Muriel Ruston Stobie.  (Photo courtesy of Muriel Ruston Stobie.)
