Thank you. I'm sorry for the delay, but I've been very busy on my end.
About myself. Ok. I live in Winnetka, CA. Winnetka's part of the city of Los Angeles and is a suburb located in the San Fernando Valley. LA, in case anyone's never been here is truly one massive City that sprawls across Southern California. Whereas NY is massive in terms of population, it's fairly concentrated. LA is spread out over miles and miles. My community has about 46,000 to 50,000 residents (based on older Census data). We are known as the "most diverse community in Los Angeles".
The WNC is not my real job. I work for the County of Los Angeles as a Call Center Manager, for the Los Angeles County Employee Retirement Association. I have a staff of about 17 (two supervisors and 15 agents) who support our members. The County has about 90,000 members in the retirement system. We take care of both our retired and active members and are often their only source of income. So it's a challenging and very rewarding job. I've been there for about a year now. My background as far as work has been mostly in the customer service call center management area. I've worked for several companies over the last several years in various industries ranging from telecommunications (long distance) to banking (Washington Mutual) television and film development support products. A few of these were start up companies during the Internet boom (you may run across Smartpages.com which is AT&T's yellow page site... I was fortunate enough to be on the ground floor of that effort and set up their customer service operation for them). The 90's were a really interesting and exciting time in terms of the Internet.
The WNC is the Winnetka Neighborhood Council. The City set up a system of local non-paid elective representatives who are meant to serve as advocates for their community stakeholders. With LA being as big as it is, many people have a hard time interacting with their government representatives and city agencies. The NC system does that for them. We hold public meetings on city wide and local issues and work to address our stakeholder's concerns. I'm half way through my second term and just finishing up my first term as President. In fact, we just held our elections and we'll be electing our President for the 2006-2007 term soon. Politics is something I love to do and I really enjoy working to improve my community. Guess where I picked that up... yep....Dundee, NY. In addition, I am a volunteer for the Red Cross Disaster Services group and the Community Emergency Response Team for the LA City Fire Department.
Personal: I'm married (12 years!) and have one daughter who is 9. She's just started 5th grade. Wow they grow so fast. My wife is a teacher at a local private school.
Well, that's enough of me for now. You've got a great site here. I've already connected with one old friend that I haven't spoken with for several years. Keep up the good work and let me know what I can do to help.
JJ Popowich
President, WNC

From Nancy Nash Coleman ('81) we have the following update on her life and family since graduation via e-mail:
I am an alum of DCS . . . went there K-12. I graduated in 1981. My maiden name was Nancy A. Nash. I'm married to James W. Coleman from Seattle, Washington, and we have two sons together and another from an earlier relationship of his. They are: David, 20, who is in his sophomore year of college in Florida on a basketball scholarship; Joey, 10, who is in the 4th grade and in the GAT (gifted and talented) program; and last, but not least, Jadon, 16 months, who only slows down when he's asleep! After over 20 years on the West Coast (most of it in Portland, Oregon), I moved to Illinois with my husband and Joey in August 2004. Jadon was born here. We do hope to (and fully expect to) return to the Pacific Northwest before too many more years go by.
Nancy's e-mail address can be found on our Membership Roster page, if you would like to contact her.

We just received the following e-mail from Steve Fuller ('62/'63):
Greetings to my old Dundee classmates from Steve Fuller, Class of 1962. I was originally scheduled to graduate in '63, but I skipped a year thanks to the kindness of Mr. Depew and the Regents exams. If you recall, I played basketball, football and baseball, as well as being in the band and orchestra under Mr. Greyback. I've lived a very full life and have traveled far and wide. I received my B.A. (with highest distinction) and M.A. from Arizona State University. I received my Ph.D in European intellectual history from the University of New Mexico. I went on to teach as a college professor in Oklahoma until the Vietnam War. I served in Westpac and Camp Pendleton, California as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during the wartime years. I was later promoted to major in the Marine Corps reserves.
Following the war years I transitioned into the law on my G.I Bill, receiving my J.D. from the University of Tulsa and my LL.M. from the University of Pennsylvania. I both taught and practiced law in Philadelphia. I'm a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. I moved to the D.C. area and served in the Solicitor's Office of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
I have the fondest memories of my years in Dundee, 1959-62, living at 34 Seneca Street with my family. Those were "Golden Times." We had a wonderful school and great friends. I met my high school sweetie pie Pam Witter Kuver much later in life - at about the time her dad Ken Witter passed away. I've frankly lived with certain regrets all my life about my part in not marrying her, but she understands. I remember many of the 1959-63 era alumni, including Dave Tetor, very well. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU and thanks for the lifetime of wonderful memories you provided.
"Our years together forever will
remain."

We just received the following e-mail and photograph via the internet from Beth Waters Ennis:
Greetings from Beth Waters Ennis (’62),
I have been enjoying browsing the website. I was especially interested in the fact that Peggy Foster Herrick has a bed and breakfast in Altay now. I didn’t get much local news after my mother was unable to keep me informed.
I won’t be at the reunion this year. I rarely come “back East” now, being a confirmed “westerner”.
In February I joined the 21st century, as Gary’s cousin said, and connected to the internet. Slowly I am learning how to operate all the technology I have at my fingertips.
A brief summary of my time since DCS follows.
I graduated from Arnot Ogden School of Nursing in 1965 and continued on with my education, earning a BS in Nursing from The University of Rochester in 1968. That year I married Gary Ennis from Horseheads and we lived in Torrance, California for 5 years. On to Kodiak, Alaska for 11 years, Kemmerer, Wyoming for 11 years, 1 year in Las Vegas, Nevada, and we have lived in Tonopah, Nevada for 8 years now. I worked in Public Health in all of my jobs before Tonopah. In 1996 I graduated from The University of Utah with a MS in Family Nurse Practitioner. The first year and a half here I worked at the out patient clinic, then moved to the Public Health Clinic.
Tonopah is a 2500 population community in the high desert, half-way between Las Vegas and Reno (200 miles either way, but 4 stop signs from my front door) . We are at 6000 feet elevation, but weather is moderated by the elevation and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west that catch the snow. I cover a 70 mile radius area for work, traveling regularly to 4 outlying small communities and twice a month to the next town down the road that is 100 miles away. Can’t beat a job that pays you to travel places you would go on vacation.
Gary, a '60 graduate of Horseheads High School, is an electronic technician and is employed on the Tonopah Test Range, north of “Area 51”, where the military does training. We both enjoy the remote location of our life here and do a lot of outdoors exploring: nothing extreme.
I like to piece quilts and do counted cross stitch as indoor hobbies. A digital camera is my current passion and I need stock in printer ink!! I like instant results. The nearest Wal-Mart or print-yourself machine is 120 miles away.
For the rest of the Waters girls, Judy Chapin (’60) lives in Liverpool, NY, and retires this year from her teacher’s assistant job at Liverpool High School. The other two many of you probably see as Sue Spike is in Penn Yan (dental hygienist at Rushville Clinic) and Jill Wicker (secretary at Schuyler County Offices) is there in Dundee/Altay.
I have attached a photo of Gary and myself that was taken the end of May 2005.
Have a good time at the reunion.
Beth Waters Ennis (“62)

Hi!
I am Elizabeth Unwin, aka Libby - Class of 1962. I would love to be a member of the DCS Alumni Association. I currently live in Pomona, New Jersey (near Atlantic City) and work at the Salvation Army in Atlantic City. I have had a varied and wonderful life most of which I spent working with race horses in the south, midwest and the northest. I have lived in this area for about fifteen years and had various jobs. I graduated from Corning Community College in 1964 and from SUNY at Fredonia in 1964.
How can I be a member?
Thanks,
Elizabeth Unwin
Your editor has assured Elizabeth that she is automatically a member of the DCS Alumni Association by virtue of having attended Dundee Central School! [02/03/05]
Ethel Teed Perry ('60) tells us,
"In 1960, before graduation I married a local boy named Stewart Perry.
We have had a good life together. Stewart worked for Corning, Inc.,
for 43 years, retiring in 2001, while I retired the same year after doing
custodial cleaning at Dundee Central School for 23 1/2 years. Our daughter
Suzanne is a nurse and lives in Tennessee, and our youngest, Karen, is
still at home. Our son Brian drives the big tractor-trailer rigs
for the Swift company." Pictured below, along with Ethel and
Stewart, is their grandson Chad.

You can read Ethel's thoughts about growing up in Dundee and attending DCS on our Recollections page, and you can find her address information in the Membership Roster should you want to get in touch. [06/15/04]
Anna Brown Clark ('35) grew up on
a grape farm on Seneca Lake near Himrod. Following graduation, she
attended the Grigg Business School, which no longer exists, but she continued
her pursuit of knowledge and learning throughout life. In 1987, she
completed a Dale Carnegie course and then earned a CPS in 1992. Anna
was employed by Corning, Inc., for 43 years, until she retired in July
of 2003, when she received her service pin from the company, as well as
a generous check. Since retirement Anna has traveled the world.
She took a Princess Cruise Line tour to Mexico, Aruba, St. Thomas, and
then on through the Panama Canal to South Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam,
Greece, Turkey and Alaska. She also took a "sister cities" trip to
Japan and stayed with host families there. Anna then took a river
cruise along the Danube visiting various points in Germany and Austria
along the way. She took a bus tour with the Masons during which she
visted London and Scotland. Finally, she took granddaughter Janice
Knowles and great-granddaughter Sarah to the Bahamas and to Disney World
in Florida.

Anna's address information can be found on our Membership Roster page, if you would like to get in touch with her. [06/15/04]
Erma Briggs Mullins ('56), who currently resides in Penn Yan, retired from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper in 2000, and now she keeps busy serving as a reading buddy for Becky Bond's first grade class at DCS, working at the Once Again Shoppe in Penn Yan, and volunteering for the Food for the Needy and Christmas for the Needy programs. Erma's husband passed away in 1984, but she has three children and seven beautiful grandchildren. Daughter Ginny Fenton is Yates County deputy clerk, while daughter Mindy Johnson is a counselor at DCS. Her son Roger is an auto parts warehouse manager in Columbus, Georgia. Erma says she has always loved Dundee Central School, and that's why she volunteers there.
Erma's address information can be found in our Membership Roster, if you would like to get in touch with her. [06/03/04]
Sherry Hofer Collins ('62) of Lowman, New York tells us via an e-mail that after graduation from DCS, she attended SUNY Geneseo, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in library science. Following her marriage, she began working full time at the Corning Public Library in 1968, while at the same time earning her Master's in English literature at Elmira College. In 1978, she began working for the Southern Tier Library System as children's consultant. After being laid off in 1980 because of state budget cuts, Sherry became children's librarian at Horseheads Free Library and remained there for 23 years. Last September, Sherry was appointed head of youth services at Steele Memorial Library in Elmira. She is planning to retire in December of this year. Sherry has one daughter, two grandchildren and raises horses as a leisure time activity.
If you would like to contact Sherry, her address information can be found in our Membership Roster. [05/19/04]
Clyde ('54) and Patricia Knapp Kenyon ('58) of Melbourne, Florida tell us that they are enjoying retirement under the blue skies and sunshine in Florida. Clyde spent four years with the U.S. Marine Corps (1954-58) and twenty-six years with the New York State Deparment of Transportation. The couple have four children and five grandchildren. Clyde's hobby these days is fret work, and Pat enjoys crocheting, reading and painting.
Read about Pat's recollections of living in the Dundee area and attending DCS on our Recollections page, and you can find the Kenyon's address information in the Membership Roster, if you would like to contact them. [05/11/04]
Jean Bayer McEvoy ('57), who now
resides in Loveland, Colorado, will not be attending the 2004 reunion,
but she says her thoughts will be with us who do. Jean graduated
as a registered nurse in 1960 in Rochester, and in 1988 she earned her
B.S. as a physician's assistant from St. Joseph's College in Maine.
Although now retired, Jean still works part time as an R.N., but her passion
is country line dancing, which keeps her very busy. In fact, she
teaches country line dancing and has a dance team that perform at schools,
churches and private parties. She also teaches kids 5-18 involved
in 4-H to compete in dance teams on the state level. So far Jean
has had three state champion teams in three years, and she is currently
working on the fourth! Jean has been married for 44 years and has
two sons and six grandchildren. Recalling her days in Dundee, she
enjoyed the the small town feeling and country living, as well as knowing
all her classmates. One of her fondest memories is of going square
dancing at the Grange Hall every week.

John A. Hammond ('45) of Staatsburg, New York tells us that he served with the U.S. Army from 1945 through 1947, then attended an electrical trade school in Chicago the following two years. He joined IBM in 1950 and continued in their employ until 1980. After retiring in 1981, he enjoyed traveling throughout the northeast, Maine and New York in particular, as well as refinishing antiques. In 2003, John lost his left leg because of diabetes and now is confined to a wheelchair. He has a wonderful wife of 54 years, two children and two grandchildren. He says he would love to come to a reunion, but the distance from his home to Dundee is just a bit too far for him to travel these days. John's sister Joan Townley was a member of the first class graduating from DCS in 1939. At the time he was in sixth grade, and Glenn Dibble was his teacher. He occasionally gets to talk to some old friends from Dundee, including Bob Allen. [05/05/04]
Dave and Kay Briggs e-mailed us to update their address information since moving to their new home in Dade City, Florida. (See our Membership Roster page.) Dave ('61) still trains harness horses and has worked part time as a security guard for the past two years. Kay is working as a nurse at Pasco Regional in Dade City. Son Bill ('86) is still in the U.S. Coast Guard and is stationed in Clearwater, Florida. The twins Dana and Ashley are now seven years old. Daughter Jennifer ('85) has been married for four plus years. She and husband Fred live in Lakeland, Florida and have a son Nathan, who will be three in June. We still miss our friends and the beautiful summers in New York and hope to get back again this year. Anyone who comes to Florida is more tham welcome to stop by. We're about forty miles north of Tampa. [04/12/04]
Ida Green Howell ('41) now resides in Valley View, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Following graduation Ida first worked as a draftsman, copier and then inspector of gun parts during World War II. At nineteen she joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps at Alfred University, but she lacked six months of completing the course because of poor health. After thirteen years, Ida did complete the program in nursing at the hospital in Ithaca. She first tested as a licensed practical nurse and worked in the nursing profession through 1977. Ida did continue her education in the field, taking additional courses at Corning Community College, where she passed the examination as a registered nurse in 1977. In total she spent thirty years in the nursing profession. Ida and family lived at various times in Horseheads, Elmira, Lafayette, Indiana, and once again back in Dundee.
Her youngest son has three girls, ages seven, nine and a half, and twelve. Another son living in the Atlanta area earned a degree in art from the University of South Georgia, and he has one son. Her daughter Kristen has a girl seven and a little boy nearly three. Ida says she just does not get to see all the grandchildren as often as she would like. As she does watch them grow up and sees what they are learning in school, however, Ida is happy to have had the opportunity to get her education in a rural area with so much less stress. "Those were much more carefree days, less complicated," says Ida.
If you would like to contact Ida, her address information can be found in our Membership Roster. You can also see her picture among those of other alumni attending our reunion last June. [11/24/03]
Charles F. Brewer ('33), presently of Henrietta, New York, attended Fredonia State Teachers' College and then taught in Newfield, New York, for six years. He was drafted on July 9, 1942, spent more than two and a half years overseas and was discharged on November 11, 1945. The following month, on December 24, 1945, he married, and the couple were together for the nearly 56 years before his wife passed away. They had one son. Charles was employed by the Social Security Administration for twenty-seven years before retiring in 1973.
Charles' address information can be found in the Membership Roster section, if you would like to contact him. [10/27/03]
I left Dundee in 1984. I attended community college in Florida and received my degree in business management. I am currently office manager for Lamar Outdoor Advertising. I've lived in Lakeland, Florida, for the past 19 years (gosh, I'm getting old!). I've got one beautiful 19-year-old daughter, who graduated from high school in 2002 and is now attending Polk Community College, studying to be a nurse. I met the man of my dreams in November of 2000 and we married December 28, 2002. I try to get home at least once a year. I remember not being able to wait to get out of that town. Now I go back each year and hate to leave my family and friends. I can't think of a better place to have grown up. I've made friendships there that will last a lifetime!! I'll send some pictures later.
Debi's address information can be found in our Membership Roster section, if you would like to contact her. [10/02/03]
After leaving DCS, Dora Green Leach ('41) worked off and on for the federal government during World War II. She retired in 1981 from service as a claims representative with the Social Security Administration. During the late 70's and early 80's Dora attended Elmira College. Since 1981 she has been a real estate agent with the Watkins Glen office of the Prudential Ambrose and Shoemaker agency. Dora's husband Louis is retired from the Stanmour Liquor Company. The couple have one daughter, Bonita, who is married to James Mueller, a self-employed consultant, and two wonderful grandchildren. Matthew, the older, graduated from the University of Virginia and is now self-employed. Their younger grandson, Chris, is a junior at Virginia Tech, majoring in marine biology. Daughter Bonnie is currently Director of Information Services, Knowledge Services, at the U.S. General Accounting Office.
Dora has many fond memories of the area. "After leaving Dundee in 1941, I travelled the U.S. Air Force circuit with my husband Louis, while he was in training as a pilot. When he was transferred overseas, I moved to Elmira as my permanent home. We retired in the 80's and moved to our summer home on the lake after we renovated the house. We have enjoyed being back in the area."
Dora's address information can be found in our Membership Roster section, if you would like to contact her. [09/30/03]

the school walls outside represent?
Have a great day.
STEVEN BAYER
Can anyone give Steven more information about the gargoyles originally on the school towers and now located at various points throughout the interior of the building? [09/15/03]
Norma Wright Wilcox ('50), presently of Dade City, Florida married following graduation. According to Norma the couple " . . . lived around and about Dundee. We moved a lot." Norma remained a housewife until 1979, doing lots of sewing and, for recreation, fishing. In 1979, the couple moved to Florida after the last of their eight children had graduated and left the nest. All are now married, except for the eldest, and they all have good jobs. In that same year Norma herself entered the job market, first finding work as a cook in a motel and later working in laundry. She is still active in a number of areas, but her husband has retired. Says Norma, "We have a nice church we go to and we like it here in Florida. We have had a good life with some ups and downs, and we celebrate our marriage of fifty years."
You can see a photo of Norma and her husband as they renewed their wedding vows in 2000 on our Bulletin Boad page. Her address information can be found in the Membership Roster section. [09/02/03]
Jacqueline Bowen Morrill ('57) of Windsor, Maine graduated from Bryant College in Providence, Rhode Island in 1959. She married Ronald Morrill on April 16, 1960, and the couple had three children: Scott, Thomas and Stacey. They are now grandparents of eight. Last October the couple moved into a new home.
Editor's note: While Jacqueline has not been able to attend our alumni reunions for the past few years, she continues to make a generous contribution each year in support of the DCS Alumni Association for which we should like to express our appreciation. If you would like to contact Jacqueline, her address information can be found in our Membership Roster section. [09/02/03]

She then continued working at Finger Lakes DDSO as a registered nurse. Since her retirement in 2000 Neva and husband Harold spend their winters in Forestport, New York in the Adirondacks, where they enjoy the snow and snowmobiling. Summers are spent traveling and living in the country near their family six miles from Dundee. Neva says, "While our family was growing up, we traveled over the U.S. as much as possible and loved it all. But Dundee and the Finger Lakes are home to us. We have many old friends and family in this area."
You can find Neva's address information in our Membership Roster section, if you would like to contact her. [09/02/03]
Charles VerValin ('40) of Concord, California served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 through 1970 and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander. He was a prisoner of war from April 21, 1943, until September of 1945. He recalls the hard times growing up during the Great Depression, but he also remembers the wonderful people and great friends he made here during those times.
Editor's note: Mr. VerValin attends our annual alumni reunion almost every year coming all the way from his home in California. His address information can be found in our Membership Roster section, if you should like to contact him. [08/30/03]

Donald Backer graduated in 1959 and served in the U.S. Navy until November of 1962. On December 1, 1962 he married Marjorie Kelly in Noank, Connecticut. The couple had four children: Lee Ann, Scott, Richard and finally Deborah in 1969. In that year the family moved back to Dundee, where they lived until 1987. With the children grown Don and Marjorie moved back to Connecticut, where they resided until 1992, when they moved to their present home in New Jersey. Daughter Lee Ann still lives in Connecticut, while son Scott lives in Penn Yan and Deborah lives near Wayne, New York. Don and Marjorie presently have eleven grandchildren.

Robert Ameigh graduated from DCS in 1964 and spent the next four years with the U.S. Air Force. He then returned to Dundee and began working at Shepard Niles in Montour Falls, where he stayed for the next 34 years, until the company closed their doors. Bob now works at Lane's Yamaha in Watkins Glen. A friend with whom Bob worked at Shepard Niles introduced him to the lady who was to become his wife. Bob and Donna Ameigh have now been married for 34 years and have lived in Dundee for the last 31. Donna graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1968, but she has worked at Dundee Central School for the past 22 years, after joining Bob here in Dundee, and " . . . I now feel more a part of DCS than EFA." She currently serves as attendance clerk at DCS. The couple have a daughter, Antoinette, who will turn thirty on May 1st. She is a teacher at Sherburne-Earlville School and is presently working on her degree in administration. Antoinette is married to Christopher Halliday, a professional firefighter/paramedic in Syracuse, where the couple make their home.
Donna recently contacted your editor looking for some pictures of the school showing the original towers. She is one of the advisors for the Class of 2008 and is assembling a scrapbook about DCS for members of that class. [05/01/03]
Furman W. Kendall ('64) served in Viet Nam following graduation and then attended Florida State University, earning his degree from there in 1972. He has been married to the former Nancy Osborne for thirty-five years. The couple have two children, Mark Kendall and Christine Kendall Sutherland, and two grandchildren, Erica and Megan Sutherland. Furman has operated the well-known local insurance business, the Douglas B. Miles Agency, Inc., at 23 Main Street in Dundee for a number of years.
Editor's note: We wish to thank Furman for his generous contribution in support of the DCS Alumni Association. Furman's address information can be found in our Membership Roster section, should you wish to get in touch. [04/29/04]
The following contribution, pasted directly from his recent e-mail, is from Paul Krause:
Hello,
My name is Paul Krause, Class of
1983. I have been awaiting information on
our class reunion, but have not
received anything as yet. I was wondering
if anybody knows anything about
it?
Any of you out there who were members
of the class of '83 may remember me as
the Class Treasurer -- almost every
year. I graduated and went almost
immediately into West Point, and
graduated in 1987 with a degree in
engineering management. As
all graduates, I went into the Army as a 2nd
Lieutenant. Some of the positions
I held were tank platoon leader, company
executive officer, company commander,
brigade adjutant, and battalion
executive officer. I got
out of the Army a few years ago due to feet and
knee problems, and am now a high
school algebra and geometry teacher in San
Antonio, TX. I have two boys
who have followed in my passion for soccer,
and a wife who shares my passion
for everything.
One of the biggest regrets I have
from high school was that, while I was on
the soccer team my freshmen through
junior years, we did not have a team in
senior year. It was so disappointing.
On the bright side, most of my
classmates and surrounding classes
were truly great people. The rest of the
world could learn some lessons
from how we all got along. I remember
arriving in Dundee during kindergarten,
and one of the first people I met
was Randy Knapp. We became
the best of friends, and remained that way
throughout our elementary days.
As time went on, and interests changed,
there were a lot of other good
friends, such as Kevin Howell, Rod Pollack,
and Kevin Fultz. Later, as
we got into sports (and girls), people from
other classes became close.
In high school, due to similar interests and
classes, my best friend became
Chris Averill. Regrettably, he is about the
only one I've really kept in touch
with, and even that has not been as often
as it should be.
I just wanted to say I miss you
all in Dundee, and if it wasn't so darn
cold, I'd want to move back
there and relive it all!
Please include me in any informational
mailings, and post my name and
address. And if anybody does
know anything about a reunion, please send
that along, too!
Thank you,
Paul Krause

The following contribution, which we paste directly from her recent e-mail, is from Lisa Travis:
Hello,
First of all I must tell you again,
what a wonderful website you have.
I have talked to you on several
occasions. My name is Lisa Travis. I am the
daughter of John Travis (1955).
I am the cashier in the pharmacy at P&C in
Penn Yan.
Although, I left Dundee Central
in 1982, the end Fifth Grade, I never forgot
what a wonderful school it is &
I have often wondered what happened to
several of my friends from that
era. Class of 1989. I stayed in touch with a
few until about my Freshman year
& then sadly lost in touch.
I can also proudly say that my
favorite teacher of all time, is a former DCS
Alumni herself. That would be Mrs.
Nancy Peele. She loved us all & made us
all feel special in her own way,
& still does whenever you get the pleasure
of seeing her.
I graduated from Penn Yan Academy
in 1989 then went on to HCCC & FLCC
respectively for one year. I hope
to take an online course soon to become a
Licenced Pharmacy Tech. I do that
now part-time & I must say I love it, for
I am true people person, &
I find the job very interesting.
I was married for in 1997 to Allen
Bishop from Penn Yan. He was the co-owner
of Murphy & Bishop Tax Service
also in Penn Yan.
Allen passed away very suddenly
in March of 2001. He commited suicide. I am
proud to say that although I miss
him, I am a much stronger person.
I moved back home with my mother
& step-father after that.
In January of this year, (2003)
I moved into my boyfriend's home in the
country, along with my pride &
joy (my cat Zoey) lol.
Things are going very well for
me & I would love to hear from anyone that
remembers me.
My email address has changed from
what I wrote in the guestbook entry,
please take note of that. It is
ZoeyB97@hotmail.com .
I really enjoyed reading the entry
from Bette Jones & seeing the picture of
her & her grand daughters Kim
& Julie, (Barbara's daughters).
I spent a lot of young years with
them on Stoll Street. For Barb babysat me
a lot. To this day I still smile
when I think of those fun days & even share
the story of how Julie broke her
arm while playing a scene from my favorite
tv show "Emergency". How strange
is that.
Take care & would love to hear
from anyone. Looking for any info on Class of
1989 members & would love to
have a 1989 Highlander if any would & could get
there hands on one for me.
Thank you
In our guest book you can read more about Lisa, her memories of DCS and what she has been up to since leaving after the fifth grade. We certainly encourage any readers who remember Lisa from her days at DCS to contact her at ZoeyB97@hotmail.com. [02/22/03]
Charles (Chip) Harbour attended DCS from 1974 until 1979, but he left the area before graduating from school in 1981. Chip was very active with Symphonic Steel while attending DCS, and he e-mailed us after finding our feature on the steel drum band on the DCS Today page of the web site. He has many fond memories of his days with Symphonic Steel and attending DCS. Among others things he recalls staying after school to " . . . play with the computer." From here we quote directly from his e-mail:
Well, that last part had a lasting impression on me - I now work in one of the largest single computer centers in the country. I moved from Dundee in 1979 to mid-Michigan, where I attended Michigan State University (eventually completing a degree in statistics and computer science at Central Michigan University), marched in their marching band and continued to pursue music as a hobby. I met my wife Jennifer at Central, and the two of us lived in the Washington, D.C. area while she worked on her master's degree at George Washington University. We now live in West Branch, Iowa, while she works on her Ph.D. at the University of Iowa (history, black women in the Civil War era). We have a two-year-old little girl (Olivia Grace) who is just a joy (keeps us running, though) - talks a blue streak. I work for John Deere in their global computing center on their mainframe performance and capacity planning team. We love living in Iowa (though not as pretty as upstate New York), and we would like to stay somewhere in the Midwest once Jennifer completes her degree (but could be talked into returning to New York - Jennifer's best friend teaches at Cornell).
Be sure to read Chip's memories of attending DCS and his days with Symphonic Steel in our Recollections section. [12/11/02]
Mary Backer ('70) describes herself as "Fred, Don, Mike and Carol Backer's little sister." Mary is currently senior administrative assistant in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, where she is working with some well-known names in the field: Don Engelman, Lynne Regan and Fred Richards. "An interesting place to work!" according to Mary.
Mary has promised to send us a more detailed report about her activities since leaving DCS. Your editor recalls seeing Mary when she was a member of the very successful DCS team that appeared on It's Academic, a local TV program originating in Syracuse in the late 60's. The format used was similar to that of the College Bowl, which appeared on the CBS television network a few years earlier. Mary's address information can be found in our Membership Roster section. John M. Stocking ('43) and Jane Shults Stocking ('42) now reside in Melbourne, Florida. The couple have four children and seven grandchildren. They usually return to Dundee each summer to visit John's sister Bette Jones, Jane's brother Bill Shults, Eddie Palmer and Charlie Curran. John and Jane also regularly attend the reunion of former Dundee residents which takes place in Auburndale, Florida each year.
Jane attended the Highland Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, where she earned an RN degree in 1946. She subsequently did post graduate work at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.
John M. Stocking served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps from October of 1943 through April, 1946. He held a variety of jobs until 1950, when he matriculated at Paul Smiths College in Paul Smiths, New York. John later transferred to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 1951. He graduated from there in 1954 with a B.S. in commerce and finance. John has held a variety of positions over the years with companies from Philadelphia to Atlantic City to Florida. He has served with US Airways, worked part time with the Margate, New Jersey police department and done volunteer work with AARP.
The Stockings' address information can be found in our Membership Roster section, if you'd like to get in touch. [12/01/02]
Wilma Marshall Cowan ('52) now lives in Florence, Arizona. Wilma attended nursing school in Rochester following graduation and became an registered nurse in 1955. She later earned a B.S. in nursing from St. Francis College in Joliet, Illinois (1980). From 1981 through November of 1984, Wilma served at the King Mushat Hospital in Saudi Arabia. During the period 1985-1989 she was a member of the Traveling Nurse Corps and practiced in eighteen different states. From November, 1989 through February, 1991, Wilma served as a civilian nurse with the U.S. Army in Dharham, Saudi Arabia. She retired at age 62 after working at a nursing home in Phoenix for a year and two years (1955-1996) with the Arizona Department of Corrections in her present hometown of Florence. Wilma later returned to work part time with a program for prisoners in Florence, but she is now fully retired.
Wilma and her husband (now deceased) had four children. She says that she is " . . . getting too old to recollect a heck of a lot, but I'm glad that it [DCS] was a small school. I feel sorry for problems schools are having now. I'm real grateful for growing up when and where I did."
Wilma's address information can
be found in our Membership Roster section, should you like
to get in touch with her. [12/01/02]
Geraldine Kapuschat Jaeger ('39) moved from Hot Springs, Arkansas to Phelps, New York in April, 2002. She remembers carrying her books from the old school to the new Dundee Central School when it opened. Today she enjoys her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, picnics and baking pies. Geraldine says that she'll miss her old friends and the mineral waters in Hot Springs, but she looks forward to making new friends here, along with the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available locally.
Genevieve Kapuschat Fox ('40) says that there is " . . . nothing outstanding or exciting in my life. I have four children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. I still like to read, and the last few years I have been driving Mennonites [in my car], which gets me out of the house." [12/01/02]
Editor's note: To those who may not be aware, in the last twenty-five years or so Yates and some surrounding counties have become home to thriving communities of Mennonites and Amish, many of whom have migrated here from southern Pennsylvania. Occasionally members of these orders require transportation other than the traditional horse and buggy.
If you would like to contact either Geraldine or Genevieve, you can find their address information in our Membership Roster. Genevieve also has a few thoughts about her school days in our Recollections section.
Gene Morris Denison ('58) and Stuart Denison ('56) currently reside in Rochester, New York. Following graduation, Gene attended the Rochester Business Institute, where she pursued a program in secretarial science. She worked at Kodak until retiring from there in 1991. Gene then obtained a position in the human resources department of Spectrum Office Equipment, a supplier to commercial and industrial accounts in the Rochester area. That company was purchased by Staples in 1995. Gene has two daughters, Barbara and Katherine, who in turn have provided her with five grandchildren ranging in age from four to sixteen. Gene divorced in 1991 and married Stuart Denison ('56) in 2001. She enjoys reading and gardening and serves as a volunteer usher for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rochester Broadway Theater League. Gene says, "We were so fortunate to grow up in the 50's."
In May 1959, Stuart enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served until May of 1963. From June 1967 through August 1986, he served as an officer with the USAF, ending his twenty-three year career with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Stuart earned a B.S. in industrial education from the University of New Mexico in 1967 and subsequently obtained a graduate degree from the University of Alaska in 1975. He has two sons now thirty-two and twenty-seven years of age. The older is married and has earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from MIT. The younger is now in the computer business, although he holds a B.A. in psychology from Auburn University. Stuart divorced in 1998 and married former high school girl friend Gene Morris in 2001. As far as his recollections about growing up in the Dundee area, he fondly recalls spending summers in Rock Stream creek. [09/16/02]
[Editor's Note: Your editor recalls sharing a library table with Stuart for study hall one semester. Gene, of course, was our classmate. As one gets older, it is sometimes difficult to remember exactly what one did only a day or two ago. However, even after all these years I remember that the classmate we all called Gene was, in fact, Marjory Gene Ann Morris. I'm not sure where I first learned this information, but apparently knowing someone with four names left an indelible impression on this writer. As freshmen Gene and I were both in Miss Spencer's home room, and I believe we both had her for English that year as well. Apparently Gene closely resembled a former student of Miss Spencer's, and as a consequence quite frequently Miss Spencer would refer to Gene as Gertrude. This invariably resulted in a round of snickers from the rest of the class.]
Frances Faucett Kaufman ('34) tells us she worked as a cook in the Penn Yan hospital for five years and taught ceramics for some twenty years. She also taught Sunday school and served as a 4-H leader for twenty years, as well as an officer in Eastern Star. She has been a member of the Crystal Valley Grange for sixty years and Home Bureau for forty years. [08/25/02]
Pasted below, directly from his e-mail, is a message recently received from Ken Conrad ('42):
I have just spent at least an hour or two looking at all of your pages
and it was like a trip home. I am Ken Conrad class of '42 and did
not see a great deal of information from that year. My father was
pastor at the Wayne Baptist church. We lived in that part of New
York for just seven years. I attended Hammondsport High school for
two years and then was hospitalized a year and the big DSC was built
in Dundee. The kids in Wayne could opt for whichever school they
wished to attend and I chose Dundee. I had two years left of the
high school ordeal and graduated, as I said, in '42.
I recall our senior
class being bussed to New York city for the senior trip. It was like
taking babes out of the woods and we thrilled at the sights of metropolitan
living. After graduation I moved to Philadelphia and attended the
famous Cherry Street School of fine Art. Dad took a church in Ohio
and after a couple of years in Philly I followed to Ohio and attended the
Cleveland School of fine art. My artistic career was short lived
and I went back to Philadelphia to attend college and seminary to follow
Pop's foot steps. In '62 my current wife at the time and I went to
a reunion in Dundee. Stayed in a lake front motel I can't remember
where. You could probably refresh my memory. Joanne Dibble
asked me to MC that event but few people even remembered me. Sad
huh?
I Took a country church
in Southern Ohio and got more degrees at Wittenberg. Make a long
story short I got the whole load B.D., Th.M. and Ph.D but never equaled
the old man and his Bible school only training. My ministry was short
lived and other businesses took up my time until old age. Now I write
a weekly newspaper column that appears in several papers under the title
of "Bible Questions". and I feel I did not let that grand old man
down.
Last year I
attended the Hammondsport reunion after all those years away from the beauty
of Keuka. It was a lonesome affair and I found only one or two who
knew me at all. That Sunday I went to Dad's old church in Wayne and sat
under a stained glassed window dedicated to him. Took a ride to Dundee
and saw no one I could recognize or who would have recognized me.
I wondered if DSC had reunions and thought I might go to one, arthiritis
permiiting. Reminded me of Doc. Witter the art teacher and
the pictures we painted together in the art room at Dundee.
In reviewing
your pages I found a coupla names that rang a bell and brought back a face.
Thanks for the home coming and I just might pop in next year if you will
tell me when and where. Maybe you could pass this blurb on to any
of that class that are still kicking. Ken
Ken's address information can be found in the Membership Roster, if you would like to get in touch. [08/20/02]
